Shirley German, IBCLC, RLC

Shirley is an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and a Registered Lactation Consultant with the International Lactation Consultant Association, a worldwide network of lactation professionals.

Shirley provides private lactation consults; lactation, breastfeeding and returning to work/school, education & support; as well as program development & evaluation, for the UC Davis Breastfeeding Support Program on the Davis campus.

Shirley also provides outpatient lactation support and education for the UC Davis Health Services, Medical Group in Davis, and, is one of the lactation consultants associated with the various lactation studies  conducted by the UC Davis, Foods For Health Institute. At present, Shirley is interested in the advancement of a global continuum of care plan for professional outpatient lactation/breastfeeding support; the relationship & importance of breastfeeding to the development of the human gut; and, further increasing the exclusivity and duration of breastfeeding beyond hospital discharge.

Shirley works from the Hubert Heitman Staff Learning Center on the main Davis campus. Her hours are Wednesdays from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm; every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month from 9:30-11:30, and, every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Friday of the month, from 9:30-11:30. Adara is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, holds a Certificate in Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and is an actively licensed SLP in the state of California. She received her Bachelors of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from New York University, her Masters of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is a graduate of the Mary Rose Tully Training for Lactation Consulting, also at UNC Chapel Hill. She completed her Clinical Fellowship in Speech-Language Pathology, with a focus on pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders, at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Adara's clinical interests include utilizing an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of swallowing to facilitate breastfeeding, and protecting breastfeeding and the provision of human milk for medically fragile infants.
