No COVID-19 Related Layoffs

There will be no COVID-19 related layoffs for career employees through June 30, 2020

"Providing pay and health and welfare benefits during this period will allow employees to more effectively care for themselves and their families."

Faced with uncertainty during suspended operations, we continue to make critical decisions in the best interests of the University and our campus community; decisions that ensure the best possible stewardship of our workforce.

We don’t have all the answers – but we are working to provide them as quickly as possible.

We are in this together!

FAQs

Below are some questions for which we are developing guidance, please return frequently for updates.

  • Why is this necessary?
  • We have colleagues in various settings who are unable to work because of facility closures, curtailed operations, or other disruptions due to COVID-19. This commitment ensures career employees will remain employed and retain pay/benefits through June 30.
  • What Happens After June 30?
  • Should this be necessary, the University will engage with various employee groups to consider appropriate measures.
  • How does this impact represented employees?
  • There will be additional details forthcoming, but we are working with the unions to redeploy workers to areas of need and keep as many employees working as possible.
  • If I can’t be redeployed or work remotely, what can I do to help?
  • That’s a great question and thanks for asking. This is new territory for all of us and we will be providing guidance and options shortly.
  • Are we still hiring new people?
  • Effective immediately, we are implementing a Vacancy Management program for UC Davis. This is not a hiring freeze as hiring and onboarding continues, and there will always be a path to filling critical positions. Rather, we are making changes that provide some financial protection and enable us to consider opportunities for colleagues who may benefit from being reassigned.
  • How does this impact TES and student employees?
  • The Chancellor's no layoff commitment applies to student employees. This includes Academic Student Employees, Graduate Student Researchers, and students in staff positions. Students on work study will continue to receive financial aid during this time, and campuses will do all they can to find work study jobs for these students.

We will confirm details about TES employees shortly as they are critical members of so many teams.

UC Davis student employees and TES employees on assignment are currently eligible for the same Paid Administrative Leave program as all career staff.
  • What does it mean to redeploy workers to areas of need?
  • This means utilizing employees, whose normal work assignments are not available, in other departments who need those skillsets. For example, we have custodians from the Davis Campus who are working at UC Davis Health and student employees helping build face masks for healthcare workers at UC Davis Health.

We are in this together and we will come up with solutions to meet areas of critical need so we can preserve our workforce and keep employees productive.
