UC Davis & UC Davis Health Are Best Employers for Diversity

UC Davis keeps climbing the ranks as a Best Employer for Diversity

We’re one of the best and most diverse and you belong here.

2021 marks the second recognition for the Davis Campus and the third year running for UC Davis Health in the annual Forbes survey that recognizes US employers for excellence in cultivating diversity through inclusive practices. Both the Davis Campus and UC Davis Health keep improving year-over-year.

How UC Davis Ranked

Forbes identifies the Best Employers for Diversity by asking 50,000 Americans - working for businesses with at least 1,000 employees - to anonymously rate their organizations on diversity and equity in areas such as age, gender, ethnicity, disability and sexual orientation. Then, respondents belonging to minority groups, nominated other employers in their respective industries.

Year-Over-Year Improvement

  • Davis Campus:
    • #35 (2021)
    • #52 (2020)

  • UC Davis Health:
    • #59 (2021)
    • #101 (2020)
    • #133 (2019)

We're just behind the only two other UC’s ranked – UCLA Health and UC Irvine – and well ahead of Kaiser, the only other CA healthcare organization ranked, out of 500 organizations.

What Makes UC Davis the Most Diverse

On top of employee feedback, Forbes looks at gender diversity among UC Davis executive leadership and whether UC Davis has proactive diversity and inclusion initiatives. “We work at all levels of our organization to realize the true potential of diversity, equity, and inclusion--from our office spaces and patient rooms to our policies and our community partnerships,” remarked Dr. Hendry Ton, Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. “Receiving this recognition for a third time indicates that our efforts are working and gaining momentum. As our diversity efforts succeed, we become a stronger organization that better reflects and serves our patients, students, and community."

UC Davis Workforce Diversity Improving Year Over Year

Part of Forbes’ assessment asks whether employers appropriately respond to incidents of discrimination, respect individuals and value their differences, and promote free and open expression of ideas, opinions and beliefs. “When we tell future employees ‘you belong here’ it’s because our commitment to diversity goes beyond hiring diverse employees,” remarked Christine Lovely, Chief Human Resources Officer. “We’re developing and retaining diverse employees through education, training, events, community-building, and so many other intentional efforts to enhance the employee experience.”
