Most areas of the UC Davis campus will be curtailed for six days in December.

Staff will have two weeks off work to refresh after such a demanding year, which is especially important for the self-care of individuals who have delayed taking vacation to attend to pressing work assignments during the pandemic.

To be absolutely clear:

1. The Davis campus curtailment program below is different from the Office of the President’s proposed expanded curtailment program, which is open for feedback systemwide.
2. The Davis campus curtailment program does not apply to UC Davis Medical Center, School of Medicine, School of Nursing and the School of Veterinary Medicine.
3. The Davis campus curtailment program is a staff-only program.

The schedule below provides for two consecutive weeks off work for staff.

• Staff may use vacation or compensatory time off during the six curtailment days.
• Staff with insufficient vacation leave may borrow up to six days of vacation to use during the curtailment period.

What is Curtailment Leave?
UC’s Absence from Work Policy provides that Chancellors may curtail operations at locations for specific periods of time and staff employees may elect to use vacation or compensatory time off to remain on pay status, or employees may opt for leave without pay.

  UCOP has approved the Davis campus curtailment program and authorized staff to borrow up to six days of vacation if they have insufficient vacation balances.
  
  Staff continue to accrue vacation and sick leave.

How is Curtailment Different from Last Year?
In the past, much of the Davis campus closed around the winter holidays. However, there was not a campus-wide curtailment. Instead, schools, colleges and divisions determined what operations would be closed or significantly reduced, and most parts of campus opted for a “soft closure” in which offices were closed to the public but employees had the option of coming into work if they did not wish to take vacation.

• Unlike past years, the default this year will be that most areas of campus will curtailed and staff will not be working, but they can use vacation or compensatory time during the six curtailment days, except for essential operations that require employees to work.

  The Davis campus curtailment program is consistent with programs at other UC locations. For example, our program is the same as what the UCLA campus announced recently.

Exceptions
Vice Chancellors/Provosts and Deans can exempt essential operations and the associated staff employees from the local Davis campus program.
